Lavinia is a second-year DrPH student at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Originally from Romania, Lavinia immigrated to the US with her family at the age of 5 and grew up in the southern California region of San Bernardino. As an undergraduate at Harvard College, she concentrated in history of science with a secondary field in global health and health policy. In her senior honors thesis, Lavinia traced the history of institutionalized state care for orphaned and abandoned children in Romania; she was awarded a Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for her work.

Since college, Lavinia has worked with public health leaders in San Bernardino, collaborating on the launch of a novel collective impact initiative toward health improvement in a traditionally medically underserved region characterized by numerous socioeconomic disparities. She has also served as an AmeriCorps member, assisting low-income Los Angeles residents in obtaining health coverage as part of the Affordable Care Act’s first open-enrollment period, and she piloted a care coordination program for patients with liver disease in the UCLA Health system. This past summer, Lavinia worked in Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl’s office on a project aimed at improving access to and delivery of mental health services for children and youth in the nation’s largest foster care system.
