**Ryan Jung** is a Korean-American teacher and philosopher, originally from Irvine, California. At Harvard, he studies Social Studies and Philosophy with a secondary in Educational Studies. His research focuses on the aims of civic and moral education, as well as education’s relationship to democracy. As an Undergraduate Fellow at the Safra Center for Ethics, Ryan has written about the relationship between academic freedom and free speech on college campuses. He has also contributed to building the field of educational ethics as a research assistant for EdEthics.

Ryan’s teaching experience is continuous with his research. As the chair of CIVICS, Ryan tripled the organization’s membership to over 140 undergraduate volunteers teaching civics to more than 600 elementary school students in Greater Boston, incubated a CIVICS-inspired program at Stanford University, and submitted testimony for education bills in the Massachusetts General Court. Leading up to the 2024 elections, Ryan also developed and launched CIVICS Beyond, a digital platform that hosts CIVICS’ curriculum and a podcast about the organization’s work.

Since creating his high school’s introductory philosophy course in 2021, Ryan has worked on integrating philosophical inquiry in K-12 social science and humanities curricula nationwide to strengthen students’ understanding of concepts such as justice, freedom, and equality. His organization, Students for Philosophical Inquiry, received a grant from the American Philosophical Association to organize philosophy workshops for middle school students in Alabama, Idaho, and Massachusetts. Building on those experiences this summer, he will teach philosophy and life skills to rising high school seniors at Legal Outreach, an education nonprofit that has supported underserved high school students since 1983. He will also organize public philosophy sessions for K-12 students across New York City with Students for Philosophical Inquiry.
