Michael Liu

Michael Liu is a MD student at Harvard Medical School passionate about addressing health inequities among vulnerable populations through research, policy, and advocacy. This summer, he will be working with MassHealth to evaluate and support the implementation of the Flexible Services Program as a newly covered service, allowing for the provision of nutrition- and housing-related services to beneficiaries with complex medical and social needs.
Michael has previously been involved in public and community service at the national and local levels. He was appointed a Senior Policy Advisor to the Government of Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic to guide evidence-based and equitable policies during the COVID-19. At Harvard, Michael served as a director of the Y2Y youth homeless shelter and co-director of the Crimson Care Collaborative.
Michael currently leads a health policy and equity research portfolio focused on characterizing health-related social needs and evaluating policies that shape the health of marginalized patients, particularly low-income, unhoused, and LGBTQIA+ populations. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers in leading outlets such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Lancet Public Health.
Michael grew up in Toronto, Canada. He graduated summa cum laude with highest honors from Harvard College and went on to earn his MPhil in evidence-based social intervention and policy evaluation from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.
