Harvard Graduate School of Education
Los Angeles, CA
Tyler Hester is a student at the Graduate School of Education. Prior to Harvard, Tyler spent four years as an English teacher and five years leading Teach for America in Richmond, California. Tyler’s passion for education was sparked in college when he tutored for and then led a program that matched undergraduates with Spanish-speaking janitors on Stanford’s campus. He deepened his knowledge of the educational system through work at the U.S. Department of Education during the Bush administration, on then-Senator Obama’s first campaign for president, and as a Gates Scholar at Cambridge University.
Tyler believes that trusting relationships are at the heart of what it will take to move the education system forward. To that end, Tyler and his team forged partnerships between Teach For America and the local school district and teachers’ union. Long term, he aspires to bring about large-scale, positive change for the most marginalized young people in California.
